OSU RESEARCHER GETS SHARE OF $10 MILLION GRANT

-- Kurt B. Stevenson of the OSU Medical Center is among the recipients of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention $10 million grant to study approaches to reducing infections in health care settings. Shared between five institutions, the grant will focus on improving surveillance for health care-associated infections using electronic health information.

The CDC estimates that each year, about 2 million infections are acquired in health care centers resulting in 90,000 deaths and more than $4.5 billion in excess health care costs.

The other recipients are: University of Utah, Washington University, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare and Rush University Medical Center. CDC names new prevention epicenters every five years based on peer- reviewed grant applications. The prevention epicenters select and collaborate on joint research projects.
