OSUMC Professor Receives $1.4 Million Grant

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Dr. John Gunn (43065) of the Ohio State University Medical Center has received a five-year, $1.4 million grant for a study on the relationship between salmonella infections, gallstones and the gallbladder.

Gunn, an associate professor in the center for microbial interface biology and department of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics, is studying the mechanism that enables chronic infection of the gallbladder with salmonella.

Previous research has shown that people with gallstones are more likely to develop typhoid fever, which is caused by the presence of a specific serotype of salmonella. The results of his study could suggest preventative approaches to colonization of the gallbladder with salmonella and the spread of typhoid fever.

The grant is sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Gunn joined the Ohio State faculty in 2003.
